Montgomery County History Day

Presented in partnership with

The National History Day Competition is a transformative learning experience for middle and high school students in which they learn about history hands-on by creating projects centered around a theme. In 2022 the theme is “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” Through months of research using primary and secondary sources, students create a presentation in one of five formats: paper, exhibit, documentary, performance, or website. This year the competition is taking place entirely online—and you can take part by signing up to be a judge!

Judges help students develop a love for history by providing constructive and positive feedback. The goal is to encourage and foster a passion for history.

Best of all: we make it easy! virtual training will be provided. You will spend approximately 20-30 minutes per project reviewing content and making comments. You  will then meet virtually with 1-2 other judges who were assigned the same projects to determine which projects advance to the statewide competition. While historical accuracy is obviously important, the primary purpose of History Day is to encourage students to enjoy historical research and study.

For the third year in a row, History Day is written into the MCPS curriculum for 7th grade advanced learners. As a result, the number of young people participating has exploded from a few hundred to over 4,000!

Judging will take place online between Monday, March 7 and Saturday, March 11. Run-off judging will take place from March 14-18. On Saturday, March 19, a virtual Award Ceremony will be held and the contestants advancing to the state level competition will be announced.

If you would like to get involved as a volunteer judge, please visit the district competition website or contact MCPS History Day Coordinator Kelli Champagne with questions.
