Stations on the Metropolitan BranchAll of the stations along the Metropolitan Branch were designed by Baltimore architect E. Francis Baldwin (1837-1916). He was hired by the B&O to design standardized stations for the new line. Only some of Baldwin’s original stations are still standing. In Montgomery County, they can be found at Kensington (built in 1891), Rockville (1873), Gaithersburg (1884), and Dickerson (1891). The 1891 station at Germantown burned in 1978, but was later rebuilt following the original designs. Gaithersburg and Rockville still have their freight houses, also designed by Baldwin, and Kensington has the original stationmaster’s house. All of the other stations have either been replaced with other buildings, or are no longer standing. To return to the online exhibit homepage, click here. |
