Montgomery County History Day

National History Day is a fantastic opportunity for students in middle and high school to learn about history while practicing their research and critical thinking skills. Students perform in-depth research on a historical topic, create a presentation in one of five formats (paper, exhibit, documentary, performance, or website), and receive feedback from judges that helps them learn and improve.  The NHD theme for 2013 is "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events." The Montgomery County Historical Society holds the county-level competition for local students, many of whom make their way on to the state and national competitions.

The 2013 Montgomery County History Day event was held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.  Click here to see who advanced to the State competition on April 27, 2013, and who won the many special prizes!

As usual, Montgomery County students and teachers rocked the Maryland History Day competition.  Click here for a list of Montgomery County winners at the 2013 event, including special prizes, Teacher of the Year, and projects that will compete at National History Day in June!

A Look Back: History Day 2012

The 13th annual Montgomery County History Day competition, held Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Richard Montgomery High School, was a great event.  Over 250 students brought their best work, and over 100 volunteers donated their time.  The Montgomery County Historical Society is proud to make the National History Day competition available to the county's public, private and home school students.

32 projects - including papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and websites - were chosen at our competition to go on to the Maryland History Day competition, held on April 28, 2012 at UMBC.  In addition, many local groups sponsored special prices.  A list of projects that advanced to the state competition, as well as winners of special prizes, can be found here.

Many Montgomery County students advanced from the State to the National competition, held in June at the University of Maryland College Park campus.  Click here to see all the winners from Maryland.  Congratulations to the Montgomery County students who won special prizes!

Congratulations also to our Montgomery County History Day Teacher of the Year, Matt White, from Rosa Parks Middle School!
