At the Beall-Dawson House

The Final Display in "The Year of the Hat":

Form, Function and Symbol: The Meaning of Hats

March 31 - May 27, 2012

Form, Function and Symbol: The Meaning of Hats looks at the reasons we wear hats, in the past and the present. Different styles, shapes and colors of headwear can be used to create and maintain an identity, both personally and as part of a group.  The hats we choose to wear tell the world who we are.

Right: Members of the Julia Mayer Dance Studio performing in costume at the Druid Theatre, Damascus, 1959.  Costume hats are one way we use headwear to convey (and change) our identity.

Though 19th century Montgomery County was a rural community, it was not lacking in doctors.  This exhibit showcases some artifacts owned and used by just a few of these Montgomery County physicians in the 19th and early 20th centuries, along with photographs and biographical information.
