Hours: Wednesday & Saturday, 10-4
The Montgomery County Historical Society creates links between the past and the present at its museums in Rockville and the History Resource Center at the Waters House in Germantown. The two historic houses and the doctor's office are significant resources for Montgomery County history. The stories of the people who lived and worked in these buildings offer glimpses of life in the county in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museums and the History Resource Center are also the location of programs and exhibits that bring the history of Montgomery County to children and adults.
- The Beall-Dawson House in Rockville, built in 1815, is furnished as the home of a prominent early 19th century Rockville family that it once was. The Beall-Dawson House today interprets the lives of the families, the servants and the slaves who inhabited the house. The museum also includes galleries for exhibits on county history, and it is the location for programs and events throughout the year. Docent-led tours of the house and the exhibit galleries are available Tuesday-Sunday, 12-4.
- The Stonestreet Museum of 19th Century Medicine is a unique free-standing doctor's office that was used by Dr. Edward Stonestreet from 1852 to 1903. The Stonestreet Museum houses a wide variety of medical instruments and books and includes personal items owned by Dr. Stonestreet. Dr. Stonestreet (as portrayed by historical interpreter Clarence Hickey) regularly appears for consultation. The Stonestreet Museum is also the site for programs and events. The museum is open for docent-led tours Tuesday-Sunday, 12-4.
- The History Resource Center at the Waters House is located in what originally was the home of the Waters family in Germantown. As the History Resource Center, the Waters House offers a variety of resources for history buffs of all ages. The Waters House features galleries for changing exhibits, and it houses special collections from the MCHS research library. Three county non-profit historical organizations also have their offices in the Waters House. The Waters House is available for rent for private events. The History Resource Center is open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10-4.
