MCHS ANNUAL MEETING AND RETIREMENT EXTRAVAGANZA FOR MARY KAY HARPER
Join the Board of Directors and Staff of the Montgomery County Historical Society at this special event. Mary Kay Harper, the guiding light of MCHS for the past 18 years, has stepped down as Executive Director. This is your opportunity to wish her the best on her retirement as well as meet the new Executive Director, who comes on board May 1. When Mary Kay began her tenure, MCHS was running at a deficit. It had a very small staff, 2 museums, a library and an administration building. Our reputation for outreach was negligible and educational programs were at a minimum. She leaves a larger, healthier organization with more facilities, staff and funding, with vibrant community collaborations and with a reputation for creativity and accessibility. In light of the occasion and reminiscent of Mary Kay’s years as one of the original “Beall-Dawson Caterers” (as the staff was jokingly known in the early years), we will have afternoon tea on the lawn of the Beall-Dawson House. We look forward to seeing you there. Invitations should be in the mail to you soon.To R.S.V.P. call 301-340-2825.

June 28 & 29, 12-4:00
MONTGOMERY COUNTY HERITAGE DAYS
Save the weekend for this county-wide event that spotlights history in our county! Every year over 30 historic sites and organizations open their doors with special activities, tours and exhibits. While this year’s event is still in the works, we can tell you about some of the exciting things that will be happening at MCHS:
ROCKVILLE: We are again coordinating with the other Rockville sites to provide visitors with wonderful things to do. At the Beall-Dawson Historical Park we are planning activities related to the exhibit, Good Advice. While the museums are open for both days, our special programs will take place on Sunday, June 29. Mrs. Stonestreet will be here with advice on keeping cool in hot weather and Dr. Stonestreet will tell you how to cure summer ailments. Other lessons in etiquette, deportment and getting along in polite society are still in development. We are expecting some student performances from Montgomery County History Day as well. Peerless Rockville will be hosting walking tours of the West End and have Frieda’s Cottage open on the grounds of the former Chestnut Lodge. The City of Rockville’s Historic District Commission will have a presence as well. Obviously, plans are still being made so look for more in the next newsletter.
GERMANTOWN: The Waters House will be open Saturday with the exhibit, Family Bibles: Keepsake and Testament. The Germantown Art League will be holding a Crafts Show on the grounds for extended hours. Musical entertainment is also in the works.
Heritage Days is organized by the Heritage Toursim Alliance of Montgomery County. For up-to-date information, go to their web site at www.heritage montgomery.org.
