The Boyds Historical Society was founded in 1975 with the mission to preserve the history of the community of Boyds, MD and to educate the community about our local history. BHS acquired the Boyds Negro School in 1981 and it restored the building in 1990. The historic one-room school building serves as a small museum, a gathering place for community events, and it contains period furnishings and archived materials.

The Heritage Tourism Alliance is a nonprofit organization certified by the state of Maryland in 2004 to promote the enjoyment, economic development, and appreciation of Montgomery County's past in three designated historic areas. The Farming History Cluster centered around Poolesville and the Quaker Cluster near Sandy Spring and Brookeville (which also highlights the role of the Underground Railroad) are two of the featured areas. The Menare Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization preserving the legacy of the Underground Railroad as a symbol of cultural unity and the ongoing quest for freedom. Menare is located on The Button Farm, a 60-acre living-history farm in Seneca Creek State Park in Germantown, Maryland. It features a Civil War-era barn, historic outbuildings, livestock pens, heirloom gardens, and a slave cemetery and simulates the day to day experiences of an 1850’s Maryland plantation.
